In current service, the AN/TWQ-1 Avenger is the primary self-propelled air defense system in the US Army. It is a heavily modified and armed Humvee. It's basic armament is between 4 and 8 FIM-92 Stingers. Early versions included an M3 .50 Browning machine gun for close in defense. This is being supplanted by the M242 Bushmaster 25mm gun.

The Avenger replaced the M163 VADS. The VADS was an M113 APC heavily modified carry a fire control system and its primary armament; an M168 gun. The M168 was a specialized version of the M61 20 mm Vulcan Gun, redesigned for air defense.

The VADS itself replace the M42 Duster, the only "gunned" AAA (Anti-Aircraft Artillery) self propelled anti-aircraft vehicle fielded by the US Army during the Vietnam War. The M-42 mounted two WWII era Bofors 40 mm guns, fired by a foot pedal, and rotated by hand powered spoked wheel (handle). The guns were mounted upon the hull of an M-41 Walker Bulldog light tank, and were assigned at Corps level.

Why did aircraft have the stripes on their wings for the invasion of Europe and not before?

The stripes were to identify Allied Aircraft to Allied Anti-Aircraft Units so that the aircraft carrying the Allied Airborne Forces would not be shot down by their own anti-aircraft units as they were at Sicily. The only Airborne operations between Sicily & Normandy was at Salerno. There the entire Fifth Army was simply ordered not to fire their weapons on a particular night. Richard V.
