Casualty estimates for the Confederacy have been hampered by poor record keeping and the destruction of war related documents when Richmond was set on fire. Historians have come up with varying estimates based on many sources. Much of the time, the word of "approximately" is a common term used on this subject. One reliable source on Confederate casualties are that of the 800,000 Confederate men in uniform, 258,000 were killed and most of those were from disease and exposure. Wounded soldiers amounted to 225,000.
