What is the problem with online chatting?

There can be safety issues with online chatting. If you belong to a social network website such as Facebook and you know all your online "friends" personally, then chatting with them is fun, faster than leaving messages, and is safe. However, if under any circumstances, you find yourself chatting with someone you do not already know personally, you may be in danger of giving out information which can compromise your safety, both physically and financially.

Predators, spammers, and people who commit fraud often use dating websites and chatrooms to extract information which may be harmful to you.

Sexual predators who prey upon children, women and, sometimes, men may make up a phony identity, pretending to be younger, older, more wealthy or more attractive than they really are. They may make up exotic and interesting stories about who they are, and pretend to have the same interests as you do. As they get you to be more interested in them, they will begin to ask indirect questions about you, your interests and hobbies, what town you live in and what you look like. They may ask for photos of you.

Before you know it, you have given them your email address (opening the door for spammers and people who can hack your bank accounts or give predatory viruses to your computer. Or you may give them your phone number and address, other bits of information they can use to try to get into your accounts or to actually track you down to harrass or stalk you. As a child, you may be in danger of being assaulted or kidnapped.

You may tell yourself that you have been taught never to give out your personal information, but these people are experts and will do it in such a way that you will feel complete trust in them to the extent that you don't even think about it when you do it.

Another thing you open yourself up to is becomming a victim of a scam. One scam is to befriend you and then tell you that they are in an emergency financial situation and ask for your help, promising to pay you back. They may say that they are traveling and their wallet has been stolen and they have no way to get home. Or they may want you to get involved in a complicated bank transaction so they can safely transfer money to this country from abroad. Don't ever give money to someone whom you've gotten to know online! If they even ask, cut off all communication with them and block them from contacting you.

Giving someone your email address is another way for spammers to get money. They will often do this through dating websites, because they can invent some reason for not meeting you in person, but continuing to communicate. Perhaps their exotic job keeps them out of the country, or perhaps they have contacted you from a far away state or Another Country and are not able to travel for the time being.

After extracting your email address from you, you suddenly get an email from your sister-in-in law, a childhood friend, saying they are in dire need of a loan and, again, are traveling and they ask to have you send the money to another country.

So...the lesson is: only be "friends" with people you already know, and if anyone asks you even one suspicious question like: "You said you live north of here, did you say that was Exit 255 off Hwy 0?" or "I made up a name for chatting online and I use it for my email address and everything, do you?" or "I don't know what to do! My wallet was stolen and I'm stuck here and I'm scared. What should I do?", then:

Stop all communication immediately!

Block the person from your email or dating website!

Have your computer checked for viruses.

Report the suspicious person to your parents, the chatroom supervisor, or the authorities: [See links below.]
