In the Colonial Period of American History, the essential purpose of the 'Middle Colonies' was threefold: First, they intended to establish a national presence (based on the home-country origin of each group of settlers) in the New World. Second, they intended to identify and control Natural Resources of importance in the New World. Third, they intended to facilitate trade between the New World and the home-country in Europe, with the additional aim of furthering discovery of trade-routes to the Far East that were believed to be available by land and by water-way across the North American continent.
