The 1988 Chevy Cavalier spark plug wires are quite easy to remove. The spark plug wires simply pull off on each end. Put the new spark light wires on by pushing downward on each end.
the problum is your on board computer. it controls the firing of you spsrkplugs. have seen this problum quite often.
They are screwed into the cylinder head, at the end of the plug wires.

Follow the spark plug wires to the rear of the engine and you will find the coil packs.
probably moisture getting into the distributor or bad plug wires. change cap and wires.
Backfire is normally caused by engine out of time, or spark plug wires installed incorrectly.

Replace the spark plug wires, to much resistance.
It should be on the drivers side underdash. here is a large group of wires under the hood that bolts up to it. Culprit could be an ignition pickup or PCM. Do you have spark and does it stay sparking or does it start to spark and then stop?

I'm not sure what the firing order for that vehicle is but try Autozone.com they are posting tech data on their web site now. If you plan on doing plugs and wires just do one at a time, then you should'nt need the firing order.
