You have warped rotors. They will need to be removed and trued or replaced. Causes of this are lug nuts overtightened, or heat from heavy braking at high speeds.

Rear brakes do not have to be replaced too often. It's really hard to tell without looking at it. What you can do is to replace front brakes and test drive it, if you feel that your car brakes works just fine you do not need to replace rear brake shoes.

If the bent rim is mounted on the front you would feel the steering wheel and front end shimmy or shake depending on the severity of the bend and speed of the vehicle. If the bent rim is mounted on the rear you would feel the vehicle shaking but not in the steering wheel.

How often should you replace your brakes?
Check your brakes every 6 months to see what type of wear and tear is happening. Of course if you hear a metal grinding or feel a shimmy in the front end have them checked at that time. Newer cars have sensors that indicate when brakes are bad. I usually have my brakes checked when I have my tires changed, about once a year. Depending on the amount of driving you do this could vary. Brakes have a 'squeal' factor to them, also. If you hear a high pitched squeal when you step on the brakes, it is an indicator that they should be checked and probably replaced. Dealerships check the brakes at the same time they do tuneups. Next time you take the car in, ask for a list of the items they check at the tune up times. Most check every 15,000 miles, or about once a year.

Odds are it's probably not just your Mazda. Most vehicles do that when the rotor is shot or warp\ped. The rotor is the big disc (or cd) that the disc brakes apply pressure to when you push your breaks. When the surface is warped or shot, the surface is no longer smooth, causing what can be a shimmy shake. You can tell by taking off your tire, and by rubbing your finger up and down the rotor. If you feel a lip or rough edge from the edge towards the inside, then it's the rotor. They are generally about $20-$30 to replace. Otherwise it could be that one or both of the wheel bearings are shot.

Ford E-350 front end shimmy when applying brakes?
For a peice of mind I usually start by taking mine into Belle tire for a free front end inspection just in case it's not a brake issue. You usually get an estimate of what they think it is, and as long as it's not front end related you can go right to your brakes. A shimmy in the front end is typically a sign your brake rotors are starting to or are warped. With that said, if it is your rotor it should feel more like a pulsation in your brake pedal as well. If you have'NT changed your brake pads in a while you should do a front brake inspection. Look for pad thickness and any obviuos wear in the thickness of the rotor. You should be able to have your rotors machined at a local auto store and put a new set of pads on. I would recommend Raybestos or Bendix. Make sure you you use a torque wrench for the final tightinig on your lug nuts. Uneven lug nut pressure can cause premature rotor warping. Good luck. Ed
