Both were aimed at resolving the disagreement between North and South over the creation of new slave-states. And both sides gave reluctant agreement to the compromises in the interests of averting civil war.

Otherwise, they were quite different. The Missouri Compromise was a clear line in the sand, North of which slavery would be illegal, and it kept the peace for thirty years. If California could have been admitted to the Union as two different states - North California and South California - war might have been avoided.

The 1850 Compromise was put together hastily, to enable the admission of the enormous single state of California as free soil, and it was necessary to appease the South. For this purpose, the Fugitive Slave Act was introduced, as a dramatic gesture in defence of slave property. It was enormously unpopular with the Northern public in general, not just Abolitionists, and it raised the tensions considerably, bringing war closer.
