Well, according to an article in hidden Europe magazine (http://www.hiddeneurope.co.UK) in 2005 (issue 3, page 31), Europe's slowest 'express' is the morning cross border service from Sezana in Slovenia which takes 3 hrs 20 mins to reach Monfalcone in Italy. That was of course four years ago and perhaps things have since changed, but evidently this train (which carries through sleeping cars from Bucharest to Venice) took over three hours to cover a distance of less than 40 km.

There are two different types of train connections between Gothenburg an Stockholm. X2000 and InterCity. Travelling time with X2000 is roughly 3hrs. Travelling time with InterCity is roughly 5hrs.

In the Netherlands, there is record of a train pulled by a dog, while in Australia, prisoners were used to pull trains. There were many trains pulled by horses, but these had higher speeds than those pulled by people. These were the slowest types of trains.
