What is the smell of overheated engine oil when all other things are OK ie engine running normal temp?

If you have a small oil leak that gets a little oil on the exhaust manifold, it will cause a strong odor. I have to guess at a few things but.. I am guessing because the engine has serious problem with how it is running the engine computer has increased the idle speed very high to try and keep it running. If this is the case putting it into gear will bang very hard and drop the engine speed to below what the engine control computer can keep it running. So it quits. Get the engine fixed.

More than likely the coil is breaking down and needs to be replaced. The other things that could cause this is that there may be debris under the engine cover that is keeping the cooling fins from blowing air accross the cylinder head.
