From you question I'm guessing you have a 1.5 Ltr. motor. The spark plug wires at the distributor(stand at the passenger fender and look straight at the distributor) are: bottom left - 1, top left - 3, top right - 4, bottom right - 2,. The spark plug wires on the motor (standing in front of the car) are: from left to right: 4,3,2,1.
You need to know the firing order and distributor direction. Go to your local parts store and ask them to look it up for you. If they won't help you go to a different store. Good luck.
You should check your spark plug wires. That's gonna be it

You are probably best off to stick with another 83 tranny. However, if you cannot, check with a wrecking yard that works with Honda's a lot. They have interchange books that can give you the information you want. From personal experience (I owned an 82 Prelude and an 84 CRX), Honda changed a lot of things every year in the early 80's, and it may not be possible to do a simple tranny swap. You may have to change the engine and transmission as a unit.
