Greeks and Romans were both warrior civilizations. However, they also both added much of value to the civilizations that came after them. Democracy, politics, even bathrooms and sewage lines, came from Greek or Roman civilizations.
Because the Greeks were widely known as a creative and prestigious race, the Romans wanted to connect their history with that of the Greeks. So they took the Iliad, Homer's legendary poem, and based the character of Aeneas, who fled from the blazing ruins of troy to Italy, as the ancestor of Romulus, the founder of Rome. Much of Roman Mythology was heavily influenced by Greek (and Etruscan) Mythology, and even religious beliefs. The gods of Greece and Rome were shared, though under different names. Both countries believed that their lives were presided over by the favor of their gods, and so if something went wrong, one of two things could have happened: they had incurred the bad favor of the gods or an enemy had incurred a greater favor than they had. Both countries recognized the importance of keeping the gods happy, so they built temples, statues and great monuments to gods and also made regular sacrifices.
In conclusion, I think that the Greeks are more admirable than the Romans, because they realized the importance of education and exploration, whereas the Romans simply sought to conquer and destroy for the glory of the Roman Empire. Greek intellectualism has built the world in which we live today and made important discoveries for humanity; without which, we may be living very different lives.
