An email can be used by anybody and doesn't have a narrow target, although saying this it is obvious you would not want very young children getting into the habit. So children are unlikely to be emailing. But emailing is clearly applicable to anyone who uses a computer.

Social Media was initially created for the users of the Internet to maintain contact and foster network building of users with common goals, shared interests, relationships or other 'social connections'. Hence the name Social Media.
The aspect of marketing to these social connectionsfollowed quickly as entrepreneurs realized the power potential behind getting a community involved in their products or services. Thus, social connections were 'targeted' for their potential and special interests with information, advertising, recruitment and other forms of marketed offerings of a commercial nature.
Thus the 'target audience' can be as specific as 'bird watchers in Atlanta, Georgia' to as broad as 'people who like birds'. It depends on the focus of the group doing the marketing.
NOTE: SPAM is not marketing. It is an illegal and unethical use of the channels used by legitimate marketers disseminating information of their products and services. In the same way, anyone who using Social Media to target a specific or broad audience with unwanted, unwarranted and invasive information, via the social media tools, is SPAM.
