To inform other drivers of your intent to turn. Or when used in unison as a warning that the vehicle is in trouble or stopped or broken down on the side of a carriageway.
Improved answer: To switch 'on' the signal light
We could use a little more info here. The turn signal light? In front? In the rear? The turn signal switch?
Bad flasher unit or turn signal switch

Sounds like there is a problem with the turn signal switch but it could be another problem. First you need to see if the hazard light's work normally when turn signal is not on, if it does the the turn signal switch is the problem. If your hazard lights do not function when you turn the hazard light switch on, then it's a simple fuse or flasher canister that has gone bad and your hazard flasher is in the on position. If the Hazard light's have a bad fuse or flasher canister and is in the "ON" position it can cause the problem you describe.
Most likely you need to replace multifunction switch ( Turn signal switch ) is all one switch on column. It could also be a bad turn signal or brake light bulb as well as a bad flasher unit. See sources and related links below if it ends up being a bulb.
Every time you turn left or right, or switch lanes on a highway you should use your turn signal in your car.
The turn signal/wiper switch is most likely bad and will need replacment. how do you change the switch is it necessary to remove steering wheel?
Since most brake/turn use the same filament in the bulb(1157) then if the turn signal switch is bad or offset then it will effect the brake lights.
In many cases, the brake light and the turn signal use the same bulb.
Your question was a little unclear, does the brakelight work when the headlights are off but not when they're on? If that's the case, it's a ground problem. Check the ground to the tail light/brake light assembly. If the brake lights don't work at all, check the turn signal switch. Brake lights are routed throug the turn signal so that you can use the same bulb for turn signal and brake light. BTW, if you have an air bag, don't attempt to replace or inspect the turn signal switch yourself. It can be very dangerous.
What it usually turns out to be is a faulty turn signal relay. In more rare instances, there is a short in the turn signal switch in the column. The column switch has tail, brake, and blinker lights wired into it. Good luck
there are a couple of settings you need to turn the light off at the light switch. it will then only come on if a door is open any time you want to use it ,you can switch it on or off at the light switch you can turn it off at the light switch on the dash it will then come on when you open a door any other time you want to use the cargo light you can switch it on or off at the light switch
