What is wrong with a 93 Nissan Quest van when you have to push really hard to put it into park and when shifting down to reverse or neutral or into drive you can't tell what gear you are in?

no it doesn't really matter but it should be in neutral. and when you take it out of 4wd you should put it in reverse for about 10 ft to make sure that it is out of 4wd.

Most likely pressure control solenoid in transmission....Easily tested with proper scan tool ALSO try changing EGR valve. Will REALLY HELP!!!! I just changed mine, all my hard shifting and jerking in reverse went away.
