How can it be determined when a box of girl scout cookies was packaged?
Since Girl Scout cookies are packaged and sold within a short time, they do not mark the boxes. About the only way to be sure the cookies are fresh is to buy them directly from a Girl Scout or a Girl Scout Council. Another way would be to compare the box with current boxes because the boxes change every few years. Also, some new kinds come out every year or two, so you could check to make sure that kind of cookie is being sold during the current year. If not, you would know the cookies are old. GSUSA does not recommend buying Girl Scout cookies online as there is no way to know how fresh the cookies are.

Why do you sell Girl Scout cookies?
First of all, the program is set up to allow the girls to learn while selling. They set goals and learn about selling. They can also earn Girl Scout awards related to the activities they do while selling cookies. Second, troops keep a portion of the sale proceeds to use for troop activities. Another portion of the sales proceeds goes to the Girl Scout council to support programs for the Girl Scouts. Each council determines how the funds are used. Most councils also provide sales incentives which may include some kind of credit which can be used for Girl Scout activities. My troop used their cookie profits in many ways. We did a lot of travel and attended many Girl Scout events along with a wide variety of community service projects and earning awards. Girl Scout cookies were a huge part of paying for all the activities we did!

They are allowed to offer up to 8 varieties but the have to offer Thin Mints®, Peanut Butter Sandwich/Do-si-dos® and Shortbread/Trefoils®. Any of the five other varieties can be changed each year. Since Samoas®/Caramel deLites® are the second best seller, the cookie companies keep them. So the other four varieties can be changed. The chocolate chip cookies were sold for a couple of years, then switched so that another kind could be sold.
