Well, who do you mean by "they"? The Iraqi military used mostly Soviet and Chinese weaponry. On the heavy side, you had the 14.5mm KPV, and the 12.7mm DsHK and NSV machine guns. On the light, medium, and general purpose side, you had the RPD, RPK, PK, DP/DPM/DT/DTM, and SG-43 machine guns.

The insurgency really manifested the hodgepodge assortment of weapons which had made its way to the Middle East. We captured M1918 BARs (presumably captured from Iran during the Iran-Iraq war), MG34s and MG42s (leftovers from the Second World War and the period immediately following), BREN guns, MG3s (most of these were of Iranian manufacture, and were likely captured during the Iran-Iraq War), we captured one South African SS-77 machine gun (we believe it was likely captured from a private contractor), we even captured an old water-cooled Vickers machine gun (although there was ammo for it, it didn't have any of the cloth belts required to feed the weapon, and it wasn't actually being used against us).

Coalition forces consisted both of countries which had always been aligned with NATO and/or the west, as well as former Warsaw Pact countries, so a variety of weapons was seen there. The FN MAG (and variants including the British L7 and American M240), FN Minimi (including variants such as the M249) were common, as were the MG3, PK (and variants), M2, DsHK, NSV, Daewoo K3, and others were used.

Contractors also had a wide assortment of weaponry. I've seen the Israeli Negev, Singaporean Ultimax, American KAC SR-68, and ARES Shrike in use, as well as some of the above listed.
