Well I'm guessing normal orchestra instruments like the voila, violin, cello, and bass. maybe things like clarinets, but I don't know much. Laura Ingalls Wilders' dad played a fiddle tune for them every night on his violin, but I forgot what era she and her family lived in.
Many of the same instruments still used in Classical Music (violin, trumpet, Trombone, oboe, clarinet, flute) were around in the 1800s. The piano existed by then, as well as other keyboard instruments (harpsichord and organ) that were around even longer. Strummed instruments have been around for ages, and something similar to a modern acoustic guitar was around by the 1800s. No Electric Guitar or anything else with electric amplifiers.
The violin, cello, and lute were instruments that were invented during 1600-1750. Some other instruments invented during that time were the harp and the guitar.

Or, it can be played with piano accompaniment.
