The English and French were bitter rivals and the Spanish weren't exactly their best friends either. Yet French trade was booming with the native Americans and conquest of Latin America made Spain the richest nation in the world. England wanted its share of the loot and brought with them their rivalry with the French. The French and Indian War gave Britain (the English and Scottish union) ownership over modern Canada and the United States (up to the Mississippi River).
