The Dred Scott Decision. Part of this Supreme Court Decision declared the former Missouri Compromise as unconstitutional and left the issue of if a new state were to be slave or free up to popular sovereignty. This meant the citizens of a territory could vote if they wanted the territory to allow slavery or not. In congress the amount of slave states and free states representation was equal in the Senate, and in the house free states had the advantage. Slave states wanted one more slave state so they could control half of congress and the free states wanted to prevent this. Kansas would soon become a state. People flocked to Kansas just to vote if it should be slave or free (a practice that was Illegal put unpreventable) this sudden influx of disagreeing people led to inevitable violence thought Kansas and part of Missouri known as "Bleeding Kansas"
