There's a valve called the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve that allows air build-up inside the engine to vent out of the block (crankcase). It is designed to allow air to pass but keep the oil inside the engine.

They are a normal wear item and your manual probably says to replace it every year. I do mine automatically when I do tuneups - it takes less than 5 minutes and you can do it yourself.
