In almost every vehicle, flooding occurs from one of 3 reasons that come to mind:
Alternatively, if the idle of the vehicle is too high, large amounts of fuel are injected when the car is started causing flooding or backfire.

Well did it go for aswim, or is it really thirsty. If it has a carburetor on the engine the float is probably stuck so it's getting more fuel then it can burn. If it is fuel injected then it is probably electoral.
An engine will flood if there's too much fuel going in because of a stuck choke, a bad spark not igniting the fuel, failed temperature sensors, bad fuel regulator, timing...the list goes on.
