How does chemistry apply to hairdressing?

Hair dyes are chemicals. So are the substances used to give perms and to straighten hair.

It breaks the hydrogen and disulfide bonds (bonds in and between proteins chains of the hair) in order to get perfect perms.

Why does your hair turn curly?

It is genetic. Genetics determines the shape of your hair follicles. If your hair is flatter on one side, it will tend to curl in that direction. That is similar to how perms work. They chemically soften the hair (loosen the bisulphide bonds) to make it conform to the shape of the rollers. The hair flattens where it is rolled, and the chemical chains thicken or thin in various areas. Once the neutralizer is applied, this chemical process stops and the hair hardens back over the next few days.
