Oil Accumulations on Engine Exterior

Usually oil accumulations on the exterior of an engine are the result of oil being spilled on the engine, or a leak in one or more of the engine gaskets.

Assuming that by "spark plug well" you are referring to the recessed area around the exterior portion of a plug [s] thus above the spark plug in the engine head, and that the spark plug [s] is/are tight [torqued properly].

IF that's the case, I suspect one of two probable causes:

  • Someone spilled oil on the valve "rocker cover" above, and the oil migrated downward [via gravity] and was trapped in the well.
  • Another possibility is that the gasket under the rocker cover is leaking.
