What might be the cause for a thumping noise in the rear driver side quarter panel of a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer?

I had the same type noise in my 2002 Mountaineer. I pulled the panel of on the rear drivers side and found the device that opens and closes the heat or air vent was not getting to the position it needed to be. constant recycle. Since I live in Florida I disabled the device and positioned the vent to air only. No noise and its cool now.
