Many baby boomers did whatever they could to avoid getting sent to Vietnam, and both Karl Rove and Dick Cheney are two good examples (to be fair, so was Bill Clinton). Rove used the tactic of the "student deferment"-- if you could prove that you were attending school full-time , you got a 2-S classification, and you could complete your studies. Questions have been raised, however, over whether Mr. Rove was really attending school full-time; there is some evidence that he was in fact not a full-time student at all. However, for reasons that are still unclear, he seems to have gotten away with it.

Karl Rove registered for the draft, but he did not serve in the military. He avoided the draft by saying that he was a full-time student.
