When Christopher Columbus founded spanish colonies in South America he discovered gold and other valuable metals. When other nations heard of this they all sent out expeditions to the America. The French and English sent out expeditions to America but they found nothing. In March 1496 Henry VII gave the navigator John Cabot and his sons freedom to sail in the North Atlantic (not the South to avoid conflict with Spanish galleons traversing between South America and Spain) and to discover and conquer any people, cities or regions they found. However he and other English sailors found Newfoundland not gold. Elizabeth I becomes queen 49 years after Henry's death. She was a large supporter of colonization. She fully supported the full colonization of Ireland before granting patents for men to go out and discover new places in the Americas, above the now Spanish Florida, and to claim them in her name. However early attempts at a settlement were not successful until James I was on the throne. A new colony was started in what John Smith had named 'Virginia', after Elizabeth I the virgin queen, called Jamestown, after King James I, which still exists today however not in its original position.

Why did the European countries actively colonize much of the world between the Th and amp Th centuries?

Europe is relatively small and is actually the smallest continent. The 1500s was the peak of colonization because navigation and ships had modernized as many explorers were looking for new lands and unexplored territories.
