James Cook had contact with, and claimed, the eastern half of Australia for England, from the southeasternmost corner, which he called Point Hicks, to Cape York in the far north of what is now Queensland.

Whilst Cook originally named the entire eastern half New South Wales, it is now three states: Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.
