The majority of Mormons moved to Utah in 1847 after being kicked out of Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois.
They called it Zion. Then when they found out, in order for Utah to become a state, that they would have to separate schools, stores, and public places from religion.
The Mormons were able to settle successfuly at the Great Salt Lake due to their faith, strength, steadfast determination to settle together in a place where they would not be persecuted for their religious beliefs and where the lord wanted them to be.
'Deseret' is what the original Mormon Pioneers named the area around what is now called "Utah". The federal government changed the name to Utah when they applied to become a state. It was not a city. The capital city of Deseret was Great Salt Lake City, which is now called Salt Lake City.
