In World War 1 America stayed out until near the end, and Britain which owned about 70 per cent of American industry had to sell most of it off to get the resources to help beat the German threat to Europe. In World War 2 the UK also had to face Germany alone and had to sell off its remaining US assets to sustain its war effort until the US joined the effort two years later.

So America gained pre-eminent economic power in the world, which enabled it to dominate the developed world and spread its culture via the emerging electronic media.
