Washington's French and Indian War service mostly occurred in the wilderness surrounding what is today Pittsburgh. It was an important strategic position at the headwaters of the Ohio River Valley. He was involved with the first fighting at the Battle of Jumonville, which was little more than a skirmish. The same was true of the Battle of Fort Necessity, soon after. He rallied the regular and militia troops after Braddock's death at the Battle of the Monongahela, preventing a rout and allowing the British to make an orderly withdrawal. He led the Virginia Volunteers in the Forbes Expedition which laid siege to Fort Dusqusne, which eventually surrendered. He asked for a commission as a regular officer in the British Army, but was denied, because he was an American Colonial, planting the seed of resentment that would bloom at the start of the American Revolution.
