Five presidents were residents of New York before they were President. They were Martin Van Buren, Millard Fillmore, Chester Alan Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt. All but Arthur were born in New York.

US Grant and Herbert Hoover retired to New York. Bill Clinton keeps a New York address and James Monroe lived with his daughter in New York for awhile just before he died.

Martin Van Buren was the 9th NY Governor and the 8th US President.

Theodore Roosevelt was the 33rd NY Governor and the 24th US President.

Franklin Roosevelt was the NY Governor and the 32nd President of the United States.

George Clinton was the first NY Governor and the 4th Vice President of the US.

Nelson Rockefeller was the 49th NY Governor and the 41st Vice President of the US.

John Jay was the second NY Governor and the first Chief Justice of the United States.

Al Smith was a former NY Governor who failed to win the 1926 bid for President.

Tom Dewey was a former NY Governor who failed to win his bid for President in 1940, 1944, 1948 and 1952.

Martin Van Buren , Millard Fillmore, Chester Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt lived in New York all of their adult lives,are buried there, and all but Arthur were born there. Ulysses Grant retired to New York and died there and is buried there. James Monroe lived with his daughter in New York when was elderly and died there. Herbert Hoover moved to the Waldorf Hotel in New York City for the last several years of his life. Richard Nixon lived in NJ near New York and went there to die. Billl Clinton and his wife moved to New York after he left office.

Martin Van Buren was the first President of the United States who was born in New York. Van Buren was born on December 5, 1782 in Kinderhook, New York, which is about 25 miles south of Albany. Van Buren served as the eighth president of the United States, from 1837-1841.

Other U.S. presidents who were born in New York include Millard Fillmore (born on January 7, 1800 in Moravia, NY, and served as the 13th president); Theodore Roosevelt (born on October 27, 1858 in New York City, and served as the 26th president); and Franklin D. Roosevelt (born on January 30, 1882 in Hyde Park, NY and served as the 32nd president).
