Are Christians better political leaders?

Over the course of history, there have been excellent Christian political leaders and appalling ones - just as there have been excellent and appalling political leaders of other faiths. This question can be placed in the context of a non-Christian leader such as Mahatma Gandhi, or a probably Christian Adolph Hitler. The religious beliefs of a political leader have not been shown to determine his or her suitability for high office.

Why did religious authorities and political rulers clash?

The problems between religious and political leaders lay in a matter of control. Very simplistically, some kings gave the Church a lot of latitude, including status of being free of taxation, having clergy exempt from secular trials, and allowing churches and monasteries to provide sanctuary to fugitives. Other kings wanted to limit these powers, and when they tried to do so, Church leaders naturally resented it and worked to maintain their power, which made monarchs and lords unhappy. The Church had jurisdiction over oaths, with were vitally important in medieval society, and a bishop or pope could nullify an oath, freeing people from feudal obligations. The political leaders resented this and sought to gain power over the Church by seeing to it that their own candidates were appointed. The church resented such interference. There were emperors and kings whose power was greatly reduced because of a conflict with a pope. But on the other hand, there were popes who lost much of their authority because of political moves by monarchs and kings.

What women dared to question the religious authority of puritan ministers?

Anne Hutchinson dared to question the religious authority of the Puritan ministers. She held meetings in her home, where people felt free to question religious beliefs and racial prejudice. She was a champion of the Native American people. The religious leaders kicked her out of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. She resettled in Long Island with her 15 children, and they were all killed by Native Americans.

Should the monarch be religious?

Because of the position and strength held in society by the local shaman most political leaders have found it expedient to follow a religion, usually the strongest or most vocal. That is not to say that some monarchs, presidents and leaders do not hold strong religious convictions. If they are in a position of such strength some may shun all religions and religious teaching.

Should religious leaders run for political office?

Religious leaders have enough experience with community services which could serve as their primary knowledge about people's needs. Admitting that it wouldn't compare to other politician's credibility, if we really think about it.. countries thriving in corruption doesn't necessarily need intellectual leaders.. but leaders with a strong moral character; built with dedication and honesty. A religious leader is a man for other people. It might work if he is also a political leader for the people. Not like many politicians.. who are only for themselves.
