There is no evidence yet that we can find that states what Muhammad's religion was, especially based on what his parents were. If we know what the parent's were than we might know what his religion was.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was shepherd and merchant. Islam is not founded by prophet Muhammad. It is founded by God (Allah in Arabic) per Quran revelation by God to prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel.

The prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) didn't believe in any religion before islam. He felt in his heart that there was a God and he didn't believe that it was right that people worshipped idols. Even before the revelatio, he led a very good life and stayed away from all things bad e.g. he was honest, he never lied and even if you asked the non-believers at the time, they would say that he is a truly honest man e.g. Once the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) aske dthe non-believers if i told you that there was an army behind that mountain waiting to attack you, would you believe me. They said yes we believe you for surely you are an honest man.

Islam was the first religion in the world. The first prophet and human being created: Prophet Adam (A.S.) was a Muslim and a prophet.

All the 124,000 prophets and messengers that Almighty Allah sent, starting with Prophet Adam and ending with Prophet Muhammed, were Muslims and were teaching one thing and were guiding people toward the path of Allah.

The Jews that were at the time of Moses and were following him were actually Muslims and they were believing in the same beliefs that Islam had.

The Christians that were at the time of Jesus and were following him were actually Muslims and they were believing in the same beliefs that Islam had.

The Holy prophet Muhammed said: "I was sent to perfect the best of Morals." So the prophet came to complete the religion of Allah and add the final laws and rules that were sent and perfected the religion of Allah.

"Say, 'Anyone who opposes Gabriel should know that he has brought down this (the Qur'an) into your heart, in accordance with God's will, confirming previous scriptures, and providing guidance and good news for the believers'" (Sura Al-Baqarah (#2:97)).

So we can simply say that Islam began when the first human being was created and he was Prophet Adam and was perfected and the religion was complete with Prophet Muhammed (P.)

A:Before the time of Muhammad, the majority in the Arabian Peninsula were pagans, with a significant minority of Christians and Jews.

Elsewhere in the Middle East, people were Christians, except in and near Iran, where the majority were Zoroastrian, with a significant minority of Christians. Christianity and Buddhism were both strong in Central Asia.

In Egypt, the people were almost universally Christians. Elsewhere in Mediterranean Africa, the urban population was Christian, but most outside the main cities were pagans.

The people of Pakistan were formerly Hindus and Buddhists, as were many of the people of Indonesia.

There were a number of different religious beliefs in Arabia prior to Muhammad. There were a number of Jewish and Christian Groups, most of them heresies from traditional Rabbinical Judaism and the Unified Church. There were also Zoroastrians and other henotheist and polytheist faiths that were endemic to Arabia or were followers of the Ancient Semitic pantheon.
