Europeans searched for new lands in the 14th and 15th century because they desired goods from eastern Asia. If they could obtain those goods by sea trade, they could avoid the Ottoman Empire, which controlled much of western Asia.
The Europeans were looking for trade routes to Asia. The biggest exploration was that of a man named Christopher Columbus, who had this idea that if you sailed across the Atlantic you'd end up in Asia, but others thought you would fall off the face of the Earth. In 1492, Spain funded his journey and Columbus set sail. He landed on the shores of the Americas (Caribbean islands to be exact), but mistakenly thought that he landed in the Indies. He then named the Natives Indians (mistaking them for Indians, and that is where you get the name of Indians for Native Americans) and traded with them, but he also did terrible things. No one actually knew that Columbus found a whole new world until years after his death. This then opened Europe up to more exploration and conquest, in the Americas.

Towards the end of the 15th century, Europeans wished to find a sea route to the riches of East Asia. Land routes were too slow. Because they had the meansto explore, meaning ships with long range capacity, they were used to search for a shorter sea route. Before the end of the 15th century, however, many Europeans understood that their exploration exploits set them at the eastern shores of a new hemisphere.

Most Europeans in the 1400s had a terrible sense of geography. They believed that the earth was flat and that you could fall off the edge if you went too far.
