The predicate answers what the subject is or what the subject does.
The answer to that question is the subject and the predicate.
This is not the kind of question we can answer.
The complete subject is "The last essay question". The complete predicate is "was really challenging".
The simple predicate is more commonly known as the verb.Every complete sentence contains two parts: a subject and a predicate. The subject is what (or whom) the sentence is about, while the predicate tells something about the subject. In the following sentences, the subject is in brackets and the predicate is highlighted:(The dog) barks.(The dog) chased the cat around the garden.(The board) discussed the upcoming merger.A predicate has at its centre a simple predicate, which is always the verb or verbs that link up with the subject. In the above examples, the simple predicates are "barks" "chased" and "discussed".

The predicate states what the subject does, is doing, or has done in a sentence.
A complete sentence requires a predicate to express an action or state of being. The predicate typically includes a verb or verb phrase and gives information about what the subject is doing or being. Without a predicate, the sentence lacks a complete thought.
A word by itself is not a predicate. A predicate is a portion of a sentence which can consist of one or more words. "Am" is a verb. It is possible that when "am" is used in a sentence that "am" will be the predicate of the sentence, for example: "Are you the chosen one? I am."
