It depends on the device and manufacturer, but most digital multimeters will display "OL", which indicates an OverLoaded input for the specified range. The term "overload" doesn't necessarily mean that a voltage or current is necessarily at a dangerous level or a level that might damage the device, but rather that the upper limit of its measuring capability has been reached.
In order to protect the equipment from damage, it's a good idea to set the meter to its highest range first when working with unknown voltages or currents and make a quick measurement at that level to make sure you don't get an overload (OL) on the display. This tells you whether or not you are potentially working beyond the manufacturer specified limits of the equipment (though the manufacturer limits are usually higher than the measurement limits).
The Diode Check setting on a DVOM is a special ohms setting that presents enough voltage to the tested device to conduct, if it were a diode. Old style VOM's did not have this problem, because they usually used a battery greater than 0.7 volts to run the ohm's scale. Modern DVOM's, however, can use very small voltages to measure ohms, and that would not cause a diode to conduct. The Diode Check setting fixes this limitation.

Using a DVOM on low DC scale, negative lead to battery negative terminal, positive lead dipped in coolant at the radiator neck or coolant overflow jug. Most everyone agree to - A voltage reading of 0.2 volts or less is very good. A reading of 0.5 volts should be considered borderline and anything over 0.7 volts is unacceptable. If the coolant fails this test, the cooling system should be thoroughly flushed and cleaned. However, at our shop we suggest flushing at 0.4 to 0.5. We do not wait for 0.7.

using a dvom put your leads on the condenser on the 200 ohm scale and watch if the number rises. once you reach overload, switch the meter leads and it should climb back down. If this does not occur, you have a bad condenser.
