Islam was founded in Mecca(Modern day Hejaz region of Saudi Arabia), It united the Arab peninsular and with that unification forged a mighty army that marched into the modern day Levant(Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, Iraq and Jordan), followed by their invasions of North Africa and Southern Spain. Later still they invaded Persia(modern day Iran) and spread through out Central Asia(Russia's former soviets in the region) and went as far as Pakistan. This brought relative peace to the region and trade flourished, aswel as the sciences, from the time of 700A.D-1600 A.D The Muslim lands were one of the wealthiest and advanced of their times, ahead of Europe in education and health by a long haul. Though during the Ottoman Turk reign this prosperity grew for a short while and then collapsed, the Ottomans in the end were the reason the region became a back water as they took all their resources for the building of the cities in Turkey.
