Well most people in the middle colonies, especially Pennsylvania wanted a place to practice their own religion. That is one of the main reasons they went to the New World. The Middle colonies had a very wide toleration of Religion accepting most of them. For Example: Pennsylvania had mostly Quakers, but did allow pretty much any other religion. So the role it played was attracting people from Europe who were tired of being persecuted because of their religion I guess.
I'm doing a project on that right now so I hope that helped.
Religion in the Middle Colonies was a safe place for most. Quakers were able to practice their religion through out Pennsylvania. However the movement appealed to many Americans, and it grew in strength, most famously in Pennsylvania which was founded in 1681 by William Penn as a community based on the principles of pacifism and religious tolerance. Quakers were not accepted by other religions, epically the Puritans.
