Following the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945 the state was divided into areas controlled by the US, Gt Britain and France and the USSR. Eventually the area controlled by the western allies became West Germany a Democratic state and the area controlled by USSR (Russia) became East Germany a communist state. Following the decline of the USSR Germans elected to re-unify back inot one country.
