The average car is around 800 rpm, when cold this can be over 900 until it warms up, so start it first and allow it to get to normal temperature. For the idle adjustment, if you have electronic ignition and you should have, try replacing the spark plugs and air filter, you may find will do wonders for the computer. Also try premium fuel (atleast once every second tank) and some injector cleaner and a fuel filter would keep you going. If it is over idling, it may have an air leak somewhere? vacumn hoses etc etc
