Your vehicle has a 12 volt system, charging should be approx. 14 volts with engine running. Acceptable range is 12.5-14.5 volts. If charging is above 15 volts (assuming you have a fully charged battery) you might have a bad regulator. A faulty regulator will discharge you battery when the engine is turned off.
If you are checking Alternator voltage, It should 12.8 volts to 14.3 with engine running. Battery voltage is 12.3---12.8 with engine off.
13.5 to 15.5 volts with the engine idling.
13.9 to 14.3 volts with engine running.
Check the voltage in the battery with the engine off. Now, start the engine and watch the volt meter. The voltage should start climbing, if it does not, then the alternator is not working. Should read between 13.5 and 15.5 volts with the engine running at idle.
It should be 12 volts, unless the engine is running, then it should be 13.8 to 14.2
A fully charged battery should read approx. 12.8 volts without engine running With engine running should read approx. 13.8-14.2 volts
Automotive Battery VoltagesAssuming your voltage meter is accurate, the battery is fully charged, when the key is turned on, without the engine running, and no accessories turned on, the meter indicated voltage should be 12 volts. When the engine is running and the alternator is charging the battery, the voltage should indicate anywhere between 13 volts to about 14.6 volts.Answer 2 - A wider Acceptable Range13.5 −16 volts is acceptable with the engine running.
Overcharging. Check your voltage with the engine running, it should be between 13.5 to 15.5 volts
Most likely the alternator, voltage should be approximately 14 volts with the engine running.
== == It is a 12 volt system. The alternator should put out 13.5 to 14.5 volts with the engine running.== == It is a 12 volt system. The alternator should put out 13.5 to 14.5 volts with the engine running.
The head lamps should not get dim. Dim light are an indication of low voltage. You should have a volt meter in the instrument panel. If the voltages is not reading about 14V when the engine is running, you have a bad battery or alternator. It should read over 12V with the engine not running and the ignition in the on position. It should not drop below about 9-10 when cranking the engine. If you have low voltage during cranking and normal voltage at other times, you probably need to replace the battery.
Check voltage with a voltmeter at the battery With engine running readings should be 13.8-14.2 With engine running hold a screw driver to the back of the alternator, if there is no magnetic field, the alternator is bad.
