Despite being 50 years old at the outbreak of the Civil War, Bingham enlisted as a private in a Missouri Home Guard Unit in Kansas City under the command of Major Van Horn. He was engaged at the Battle of Lexington (Lexington, Missouri) and surrendered along with the other Union forces to General Sterling Price of the Missouri State Guard on September 20, 1861.
