go to the parts house tell them you want a belt for a car without acc - It's not that simple for a Taurus in that range... most parts stores are not going to know what length belt you need as there is no belt specifically produced to bypass this vehicle's a/c. You'll have to measure the routing(with a non-elastic string for example) of the belt without the compressor pulley factored in. Then you take the measurement of that string and request a belt that lenght. OR you can do what I'm doing now and search the web for someone that has posted a length for your particular engine. I am working with the 12 valve 3.0 and will post my results when found.

It uses a spring loaded belt tensioner. The tensioner is autmatically set. IF there is not enough tension, then replace the tensioner. The belt may be stretched and need replacment however.

I have a '95 Mercury Tracer with a 1.9 liter engine, and the pattern is identical with the '98 Ford Taurus. The 1.9 liter engine used with the Tracer, was used in other Ford models, so a quick cross reference with other Ford vehicles may also help if you ever need help with other problems.
