How do you set timing on a 318 small block dodge?

hook up a timing light and loosen dist. hold down bolt, located at the base of the distributor. start engine and warm up aim timing light at timing marks located on driver side of timing chain cover. rotate dist. until timing mark is aligned with correct degree mark on timing chain cover. tighten hold down bolt and check to make sure timing has not jumped

How do you replace the water pump on a Oldsmobile Alero 2.4L?

you have to pull the timing chain cover off which includes the harmonic balancer loosen the timing chain then once you have done all that you can un-bolt the water pump from the mtor and the timing chain housing and it should slide right out be sure to mark your valve gears and your crnk so you don't loose your timing marks

How do you replace timing chain on 89 Chevy 5.7?

Pull everything off the front of the engine. Remove the timing chain cover. unbolt the timing gear on the cam shaft (the bigger one) then pull the timing gear off the crankshaft. (the smaller one). and replace with new chain and put the gears back on making sure the timing lines are still lined up. and bolt everything back on

How do you replace the timing chain for a 96 grand Cherokee 4.0?

4.0 Timing chain and sprockets replacementREMOVALDisconnect negative cable from battery.Remove the fan and shroud.Remove the serpentine drive belt.Remove the crankshaft vibration damper.Remove the timing case cover.Rotate crankshaft until the "0" timing mark is closest to and on the center line with camshaft sprocket timing markRemove the oil slinger from the crankshaft.Remove the tension spring and thrust pin from the preload boltRemove the camshaft sprocket retaining preload bolt and washer.Remove the crankshaft sprocket, camshaft sprocket and timing chain as an assembly.Installation of the timing chain with the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets properly aligned ensures correct valve timing. A worn or stretched timing chain will adversely affect valve timing. If the timing chain deflects more than 12.7 mm (1/2 inch) replace it. The correct timing chain has 48 pins. A chain with more than 48 pins will cause excessive slack.INSTALLATIONAssemble the timing chain, crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket with the timing marks alignedApply Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant to the keyway in the crankshaft and insert the key. With the key in the keyway on the crankshaft, install the assembly on the crankshaft and camshaft.Install the camshaft sprocket retaining preload bolt and washerTighten the preload bolt to 108 N·m (80 ft. lbs.) torque.To verify correct installation of the timing chain, turn the crankshaft to position the camshaft sprocket timing mark as shown in Count the number of chain pins between the timing marks of both sprockets. There must be 15 pins.Install the crankshaft oil slinger.Replace the oil seal in the timing case cover.Lubricate the tension spring, thrust pin and pin bore in the preload bolt with Mopar Engine Oil Supplement, or equivalent. Install the spring and thrust pin in the preload bolt headInstall the timing case cover and gasket.With the key installed in the crankshaft keyway, install the vibration damper, washer and bolt. Lubricate and tighten the bolt to 108 N·m (80 ft. lbs.) torque.Install the serpentine drive belt and tighten to the specified tension (Refer to Cooling System for the proper procedure)Install the fan and hub assembly. Install the shroud.Connect negative cable to battery.

Were do you hook a chain to remove a Mercury verado 250 outboard motor?

Make a plate 150mm x 150mm x 10mm with three holes drilled in it then bolt it to the fly wheel using M10x 30mm bolts but make sure you space the plate from the fly wheel to clear the fly wheel bolt and weld a chain over the center of the fly wheel bolt on to the plate and it will lift the motor dead center.

Refer to the procedure in this section. # Remove the three nuts and the engine support insulator through bolt from the engine support insulator. Remove the front engine support bracket (6028). # Raise and support the vehicle. # Align the crankshaft sprocket (6306) to TDC by turning the crankshaft (6303) in the direction of normal engine (6007) rotation. # NOTE: Remove the lower timing chain tensioner arm bolt before the upper timing chain tensioner arm bolt. Remove two bolts from the timing chain tensioner arm (6285) in the order shown. Remove the timing chain tensioner arm. # Mark the direction of rotation on the timing chain/belt (6268) to be sure of proper installation. # Loosen the timing chain/belt tensioner bolt. # Remove the timing chain/belt. Installation # Compress the timing chain tensioner arm until the hole in the piston is aligned with the second hole in the case. Insert a 1.6mm (0.06 inch) diameter wire or pin through the second hole to keep the piston compressed. # Align the camshafts (6250) to top dead center (TDC). # Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the crankshaft sprocket is offset from TDC by one tooth. # Install the timing chain/belt.Turn the crankshaft in the direction of normal engine rotation without moving the camshafts, until the crankshaft timing mark is again at TDC. This will place all of the belt slack in the timing chain tensioner arm portion of the timing chain/belt. # Install the timing chain tensioner arm and both bolts. Tighten the timing chain tensioner arm bolts to 19-25 Nm (14-18 lb-ft). # Remove the pin from the timing chain tensioner arm. # NOTE: When correctly timed, the crankshaft timing mark will line up and will NOT be one tooth off. Turn the crankshaft two complete revolutions, in the direction of normal engine rotation, to make sure that the timing is still correct. # Tighten the timing chain/belt tensioner bolt to 35-51 Nm (26-37 lb-ft). # Install the RH engine support insulator. Tighten the three nuts to 74-103 Nm (54-76 lb-ft) and the RH engine support insulator through bolt to 67-93 Nm (50-68 lb-ft). # Install the Engine Front Covers . |}

How hard is it to replace a timing chain on a 1999 Pontiac sunfire?

very hard! I just finished retapping the cam housing bolt holes in my 2000 sunfire. but had to remove the timing chain to get the cam cover and housing off. to get the timing chain off, you have to remove the motor mount bracket off first, then remove the timing cover before getting to the chain. no room to get the bracket bolts off without some assistance to pry the engine to the opposite side.

What are a few methods of getting a broken timing chain cover bolt out?

Where is the crankshaft sensor located on a 1998 Chevy k1500 4wd?

Slide in under the front bumber and remove the skid plate so you can see the front bottom pulley on the engine. Now look behind the harmonic balancer at the passenge side of the timing chain cover and you will see it. It is held in the timing cover with 1 bolt. It will have electrical connector pluged into it.

What causes your engine to become out of time?

loose bolt on distributer will allow distributer to move worn or stretched timing belt or chain can slip or jump out of timing broken tooth on timing gears If it's an older engine, with points, they just wear out.
