Here are some basic ones:

- Focus: Its always important to have a focused picture, it ruins the picture if its blurry.

- Rule of thirds: when your subject is placed on the sides of the frame. The object is not in the middle. this creates a more artsy and creative picture

- Neutral background: Very important, you don't a busy background. it takes away from the subject you're shooting from, and can be distracting to look at.

- Keep in mind different categories - texture, contrast, pattern, shadow, etc... and play around with them to take a variety of different pictures!

I can tell you what you need, 1. A good camera that you understand and know with your eyes shut how to work it. 2. Learn about light and how to use it 3. Learn how to work with Photoshop and lightroom or your flavor to make a good workflow from camera to files to clients. 4. Always have backups and get insurance so you are covered. 5. Keep release forms on you and don't shoot anyone without them. 6. Know your stuff and keep at it no matter what others say 7. this ones important, don't do the 200 dollar weddings thinking you can do them and lots of them, they are so much work, don't kill the trade, work it and you can charge 2k but do a good job, its not the money but the images, the art and your always do well if you keep that in mind. 8. Sell your self from the start and keep doing it, you have to push and work harder than you have ever. When I say work hard, I can remember sitting at my computer at the start from 8am till 1am stopping just for lunch and dinner and to get the mail. The whole time I was looking for work, designing ideas to get work, emailing, working on photos and I don't regret a bit of it. Last but not least, learn your rights as a photographer and don't settle for anything but the best you can do, be very critical of your work and ask others always for there honest views, don't settle when you get one good one, wait till you get several bad ones, that way you can know you can correct the problems and be better. And don't forget, you never know it all, the moment you think you do, you then know northing. So work hard and your get there.
