If you are a minor, you can privately go to a lawyer and discuss your situation and what options you may have. If you feel you cannot take legal steps, the best thing to do is to start preparing for the future you can make. Get as good of grades in school as possible, take both the SAT and ACT. Ask a guidance counselor at school to assist you with applying for grants and scholarships for college. If possible, get a part time job and save as much of the money as possible. Start being realistic about plans after high school, either getting a full time job after graduating and moving out, or getting into a college. When you move out of your family's home, you will feel a lot less stress if you basically limit your contact with this parent, even to the point of not visiting them. Don't turn to drugs. Confide in a friend or an outside adult about what is occuring. Attempt to avoid arguing with your parent as much as you can, even to the point of not being in the same room with them for long periods of time. Don't yell back, just walk out of the room--the emotional abuser needs an audience and often feeds off of your reaction. Take care of yourself.

Is it heathier not to communicate with a mother who is verbally abusive?

I've always found that it's unhealthy to stay in relationships with those who are verbally abusive. But it's equally important to learn to forgive. Forgiveness gives you freedom from bitterness. And even though you might forgive someone, they may continue to be verbally abusive. When that happens, it's better to keep short and simple contact with that person.
