First, take the Uptown 1-2-3 (the red line) or the Uptown A-C-E (the blue line) ONE stop, from West 34th Street (Penn Station) to West 42nd Street (Times Square).

At the Times Square Station, transfer to the Downtown N or Q trains (of the N-R-Q-W, the yellow line). Take the Downtown N or Q to 14th Street-Union Square.

You will exit the subway at 14th Street and Broadway (unless you use the north exit, which will let you out at 18th and Broadway).

If you get out at 14th and Broadway (the south side of Union Square Park): walk two blocks west (Broadway ---> University Place ---> 5th Avenue) and then one block north to 15th Street.

If you get out at 18th and Broadway (the north side of Union Square Park): walk two blocks west (Park Avenue South ---> Broadway ---> 5th Avenue) and then three blocks south.

Broadway runs in a diagonal line up and down Manhattan, which makes the streets fairly confusing at times.

The simplest way would be to take the Downtown 4-5-6 (the dark green line) from 42nd Street-Grand Central Station to 14th Street-Union Square, at 4th Avenue. From there it's just one block north and two blocks west (4th Avenue ---> Broadway ---> 5th Avenue) to 15th Street and 5th Avenue.

But you will want to take the 4 or 5, not the 6, because the 4 and 5 are express trains and it's only one stop from 42nd Street-Grand Central to 14th Street-Union Square.

Take the Uptown 1-2-3 (the red line) one stop, from 34th Street-Penn Station to 42nd Street-Times Square.

At Times Square, transfer to the Downtown N, R or Q trains (of the N-R-Q-W, the yellow line). Take the Downtown N, R or Q to 14th Street-Union Square, at East 14th Street between Broadway and Park Avenue South.

Depending on how far east you're going and how much walking you want to do, you can transfer at Union Square to the Brooklyn-bound L train (the grey line), and take the L to 14th Street-3rd Avenue or 14th Street-1st Avenue.

Take the Uptown E train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to Lexington Avenue-53rd Street.

This station is connected to the 51st Street station on the 6 train (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line), so you can transfer without exiting the subway system.

Transfer to the 51st Street station, and take the Uptown 6 to 96th Street or 103rd Street (at Lexington Avenue).

Then walk north or south to 100th Street, and west to 5th Avenue: Lexington ---> Park ---> Madison ---> 5th.
