You have two options:

1) Take the Uptown A train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to 125th Street. You could also take the C train, but it is a local train, so there are many stops from 34th Street to 125th Street. It's only 3 stops on the A train: 34th Street-Penn Station ---> 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal ---> 59th Street-Columbus Circle ---> 125th Street.

You will exit the subway at 125th Street and St. Nicolas Avenue. From there, it's just one and a half blocks east to the Apollo Theatre, which is at 125th Street between Frederick Douglass Boulevard and 7th Avenue.

2) Take the 2 or 3 trains (of the 1-2-3, the red line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to 125th Street (you could also take the 1 train, but again, the 1 is local, while the 2 and 3 are express).

You will exit the subway at 125th Street and Lenox Avenue. From there, it's one and a half blocks west to the Apollo Theatre, which is at 125th Street between Frederick Douglass Boulevard and 7th Avenue.

As for which option to choose: it doesn't matter that much. There are more stops on the 2 and 3 than on the A. As I said, on the A train, it's only 3 stops from 34th Street to 125th Street. On the 2 and 3, it's 6 stops: 34th Street-Penn Station ---> 42nd Street-Times Square ---> 72nd Street ---> 96th Street ---> 110th Street-Central Park North ---> 116th Street ---> 125th Street.

So, since it's 3 stops on the A and 6 stops on the 2 and 3, it seems to make more sense to take the A. However, the A train runs ridiculously slowly sometimes. I have no idea why, but sometimes it runs maddeningly slowly. Like, I could walk faster than it goes, sometimes.

If you're traveling during mid-day (say, 10 AM to 5 PM) then I'd take the 2 or 3, since mid-day seems to be when the A runs the slowest. During any other time, I would take the A.

The Gershwin Theatre is at 222 West 51st Street, between 8th Avenue and Broadway, which is less than one mile straight uptown from Penn Station. So you might want to save yourself a subway fare and just walk.

Penn Station is at 34th Street between 8th and 7th Avenues (Broadway runs diagonally through the city and intersects many of the avenue blocks, including 51st Street between 8th and 7th Avenues). So, just walk down 8th Avenue from 51st Street to 34th Street.

If you really want to take the subway, then take the Downtown 1 train (of the 1-2-3, the red line) from 50th Street (at Broadway) to 34th Street-Penn Station.

Penn Station is at 34th Street between 8th and 7th Avenues (Broadway runs diagonally through the city and intersects many of the avenue blocks). So, either walk up 8th Avenue to 51st Street, turn right, and walk east on 51st Street to 222 West 51st, or walk up 7th Avenue to 51st Street, turn left, and walk west on 51st Street to 222 West 51st.

If you really want to take the subway, then take the Uptown 1 train (of the 1-2-3, the red line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to 50th Street (at Broadway).

Then walk one block uptown to 51st Street and Broadway, turn left, and walk half a block west to 222 West 51st Street, between 8th Avenue and Broadway.

Take the Uptown 1-2-3 (the red line) one stop, from 34th Street-Penn Station to 42nd Street-Times Square (at 7th Avenue), or the Uptown A-C-E (the blue line) one stop, from 34th Street-Penn Station to 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal (at 8th Avenue).

Just take whichever one you see first. If you're on the east side of Penn Station (at 7th Avenue) then the 1-2-3 will probably be the first one you see, and if you're on the west side of the station, you'll probably see the A-C-E first.

The Imperial Theater is at 249 West 45th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues. So, either walk three blocks uptown and half a block west (if you took the 1-2-3) or walk three blocks uptown and half a block east (if you took the A-C-E).
