The USS Indianapolis I got interested in this because all the accounts of the USS Indianapolis going to Tinian only mention "Little Boy." It seems that structural, non radioactive parts for both bombs were carried to Tinian by the USS Indianapolis. However, the plutonium for the core was flown in by four separate C-54 airplanes called "Green Hornets."

USS Indianapolis Museum was created in 2007.
The USS Indianapolis sank after being hit by torpedoes launched from a Japanese mini-submarine.
The Heavy CRUISER USS Indianapolis is resting on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean a day or two from the vicinity of Tinian Island (from where she dropped off some parts-Atomic type). Battleships were named after states (USS New Jersey, etc). There is no US state named Indianapolis; therefore she's a cruiser...cruisers were named after cities...Indianapolis is a US city. US Destroyers were named after US Sailors & US Marines. US Submarines were named after Fish (any nationality). US Fleet Carriers (Battle Carriers) were named after Revolutionary War battles/ships (USS Lexington, etc). US Light Carriers were named after Revolutionary War ships (USS Princeton, etc.). US Escort Carriers, also known as "Jeep Carriers" & "Baby Flattops" were named after Bays (USS Gambier Bay, etc.). NONE OF THIS APPLIES TODAY. Today all US ships and submarines are categorized differently and they are not organized the way they were in WWII.
The USS Indianapolis. In Jaws though he has a lot of the facts messed up. A Japanese sub fired three torpedoes at them and the ship sank in 12 minutes; over 500 men were thrown into shark infested water. The few survivors were ACCIDENTLY found four days later. Nobody knew that they were missing because they were on a secret mission delivering the Atomic bomb to Tinian Island. In the end the captain was court martialed and didn't live to see the day his name was redeemed.

The USS Indianapolis transported the Atomic bomb to Tinian and was sunk by a Japanese sub on her return trip. Due to the turn of events and the war ending, the survivors were not rescued for many days. Many were attacked by sharks. The Captain was court martialed because he wasn't zig-zagging in enemy water. A few years after being found guilty, he committed suicide . Then many years later the Navy turned the verdict.
