Before the foundation of large European empires, while the Ottoman empire still overshadowed these countries, settlement often depended upon adventurers who were willing to stake some of their own money. This meant that intially these people were looking for quick gains and not exactly permanent establishment. However, as mining for gold caused inflation in Spain, and other countries looked to be free of their dependence upon this country, people looked to settle more permanently. To do this, they had to find a staple crop which they could make money off of to perpetuate the colony. In Viriginia this would've been something like tobacco, wheras places like Barbadoes would've looked more to sugar to suit their climate. It must be noted that the process to find these staples was long, and often people left long before they were every found.
